The Candle Gift Guide: How to Choose the Perfect Candle for Anyone
Candles make genuinely good gifts — but only when chosen thoughtfully. A generic candle from a grocery store checkout says “I forgot.” A beautifully curated candle from a brand they have never tried says “I pay attention.” Here is how to pick the right candle for any person and any occasion.
Gifts by Personality
For the person who has impeccable taste
Apotheke White Vetiver. This is the candle that makes people stop and ask what that smell is. Complex, sophisticated, and made in Brooklyn — it is the candle equivalent of knowing a great restaurant before it gets written up. Available in sizes from the $12 mini tin all the way to the $98 3-Wick. Start with the $46 Classic 10.5oz.
For someone who loves a beautiful object
Lafco New York. Lafco candles arrive in hand-blown glass vessels that are worth keeping long after the wax is gone. The Chamomile Lavender and Feu de Bois are both beautiful entries. The vessel alone makes the gift feel expensive — because it is.
For the wellness-oriented person
Mindful Glow. A Black woman-owned brand with intention-based candles and crackling wood wicks. Fix Your Crown, Self Love, and Happy Birthday are all deeply giftable. The brand story is as good as the candle, which makes it easy to talk about when you give it.
For someone moving into a new home
Anything from Nest New York. Nest Bamboo is the safest universal housewarming candle on the market — fresh jasmine, white lotus, and hyacinth. Everyone loves it, it works in any room, and the decorative vessel looks intentional sitting on a shelf. Their Moroccan Amber is an equally strong choice for someone with warmer taste.
For the person who already has everything
Cereria Molla Velvet Wood. If they are a candle person, they probably do not have this one — Cereria Molla is not widely distributed in the US, and it is a genuine discovery. A Spanish brand founded in 1899 making one of the most interesting candles we carry. The reaction when someone first smells Velvet Wood is reliably one of surprise.
For a birthday
Mindful Glow Happy Birthday. Yes, really — it smells like a freshly frosted birthday cake, it has a crackling wood wick, and it is made by a brand worth supporting. Pair it with a Wicked Scents gift card if you want to round out the gift.
For the man in your life who claims not to care about candles
P.F. Candle Co. Teakwood and Tobacco. Leather, teak, and orange. This is the candle that converts skeptics — it smells nothing like what people expect a candle to smell like. No florals, no sweetness. Just clean, sophisticated, slightly smoky. We have sold this to dozens of people buying for someone who “does not like candles” and had zero regrets reported back.
Gifts by Budget
Under $20: Apotheke mini tin 2oz ($12), P.F. Candle Co. 7.2oz ($24 — just over, but worth it), Lucky Honeybee tin candle ($14).
$25–$50: Apotheke Classic 10.5oz ($46), Voluspa Classic 9.5oz ($35), Mindful Glow 8oz woodwick ($25–$26), Cereria Molla 8oz candle ($50), Nest Classic candle.
$50–$100: Lafco Signature 15.5oz ($75), Boy Smells 8.5oz candle ($44) + matching EDP ($75), Apotheke 3-Wick ($98), Glasshouse 13.4oz candle ($50–$60).
$100+: Build a custom gift set — come into our Hoboken shop and we will help you put something together. A matching candle, diffuser, room spray, and wick trimmer from the same brand is the kind of gift that gets remembered.
One Rule for All Candle Gifts
Buy something the recipient would not buy for themselves. That is the whole point of a great gift — the thing they would have hesitated over, or never discovered on their own. Our staff knows every brand and scent we carry. Come in and tell us about the person, and we will point you in the right direction.

The Best Candle Shop in Hoboken NJ: What to Expect at Wicked Scents
Wicked Scents is a candle and home fragrance boutique located in Hoboken, NJ — a short walk from the PATH train and minutes from Manhattan. We opened because we believed the New York area deserved a dedicated specialty candle shop: not a gift store that carries a few candles, not a department store counter, but a shop entirely focused on home fragrance with a staff that genuinely knows every brand and scent on the shelves.
What We Carry
We curate from over 25 brands, ranging from Brooklyn-made independents to European heritage houses to cult California labels. You will find Apotheke (the brand behind the 1Hotel scent), Voluspa, Cereria Molla (Barcelona, founded 1899), Nest New York, Boy Smells, Glasshouse Fragrances, Capri Blue, Lafco, Antiga Farmacista, Mindful Glow, P.F. Candle Co., Paddywax, Lucky Honeybee (made in Jersey City), and Lit Lab Co. (made right here in Edgewater, NJ), among many others.
Beyond candles, we carry reed diffusers, room sprays, linen sprays, ultrasonic and liquidless diffusers, wax melts, incense, artisan soaps, sachets, wick trimmers, wick snuffers, decorative matches, and personal fragrance including eau de parfum from Boy Smells and Glasshouse.
Our Hoboken Location
We are in Hoboken, NJ — easily accessible from Manhattan via the PATH train (Hoboken Terminal is steps from our neighborhood) and from Jersey City, Weehawken, and surrounding Hudson County towns. Street parking is available nearby, and we are a comfortable walk from the Hoboken waterfront.
We are open seven days a week. Check our current hours on our contact page or give us a call before making a special trip.
Why Shop at a Specialty Candle Store
When you buy a candle at a specialty shop rather than online or at a big-box retailer, you get something that most e-commerce experiences cannot give you: the ability to smell before you buy. Fragrance is deeply personal. What reads as “lavender and cedar” on a product description might smell entirely different to you than you expected — in either direction. Our staff will help you narrow down scent families, find something that works for your specific space, and introduce you to brands you would never have discovered scrolling through a website.
We also offer in-store gift wrapping and can help you build a custom gift for any occasion — housewarmings, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, corporate gifting, and more.
Online Shopping with Free Shipping
If you cannot make it to our Hoboken shop, we ship nationwide. Orders over $100 ship free. We carry our full in-store inventory online, so you have access to everything we stock regardless of where you are. Orders typically ship the next business day.
Come See Us
Whether you are a Hoboken local, commuting through from Manhattan, or making a special trip from the broader New York area, we would love to see you in store. There is no better way to find your next favorite candle than to smell them in person — and we are here to help you do exactly that.
Cereria Molla: Spain's Best-Kept Candle Secret (And Why We Can't Stop Stocking It)
Most people who walk into Wicked Scents and pick up a Cereria Molla candle ask the same question: why have I never heard of this brand? The answer is simple — Cereria Molla has been making candles in Barcelona since 1899, and they have spent most of that time quietly perfecting their craft rather than chasing global marketing budgets. They are Spain's best-kept fragrance secret, and we think they deserve a proper introduction.
Over 125 Years of Candle Making
Cereria Molla was founded in Barcelona in 1899. That makes them one of the oldest continuously operating candle houses in the world. While many heritage fragrance brands have been acquired by conglomerates and moved production overseas, Cereria Molla remains family-owned and still manufactures in Spain. Every candle in their collection is handmade using traditional techniques passed down through generations.
When you burn a Cereria Molla candle, you are burning something that has more institutional knowledge behind it than virtually any other brand on the market.
What Makes Their Candles Different
Three things set Cereria Molla apart from most luxury candle brands.
The wax. Cereria Molla uses a vegetable wax blend that burns exceptionally cleanly and evenly. Their melt pools are wide and consistent, and tunneling is rare — a sign of well-formulated wax and quality wicks.
The fragrance concentration. Their candles are highly fragranced — more so than many brands at a similar price point. The scent throw is noticeable from the moment you light the wick, not after thirty minutes of burning.
The vessels. Cereria Molla packaging is quietly beautiful — cylindrical glass jars with clean labels and a distinctly European sensibility. They look considered without trying to be conspicuous. Their room spray bottles in particular are some of the most elegant we carry.
The Scents to Start With
Velvet Wood
This is their signature. Spicy lavender, tobacco, and creamy vanilla — a fragrance that manages to be both warm and refined at the same time. It is the Cereria Molla scent that converts the most first-time buyers into repeat customers. Available in 2.6oz votive, 8oz candle, 3-Wick XL, reed diffuser, room spray, and diffuser refill.
Bulgarian Rose and Oud
Dark Damascus rose wrapped in smoky oud wood and warm amber. This is for the customer who finds typical rose candles too sweet or too feminine. Oud pulls the rose into something darker and more sophisticated. One of our most-gifted Cereria Molla scents.
Moroccan Cedar
Spiced cedarwood, oriental amber, and sweet vanilla. If you love Velvet Wood but want something slightly lighter and more woody, Moroccan Cedar is the natural next step. It works beautifully as a year-round living room candle.
Verbena di Sicilia
Sicilian lemon, lemongrass, and fresh verbena. The bright counterpoint to Velvet Wood — this is the candle for spring and summer, or for anyone who wants their home to feel like the Amalfi Coast. The room spray version is one of our best sellers for instant home refreshing.
Basil and Mandarin
Bright mandarin citrus and fresh herbal basil. Unexpected, clean, and genuinely distinctive. This one surprises people — it smells nothing like what you expect from the name, and it is better for it. A great choice for kitchens and bathrooms.
The Full Format Range
One of the things we love most about Cereria Molla is how thoroughly they build out each scent. Most of their fragrances are available in multiple formats: small votive (2.47oz or 2.6oz), 8oz candle, 3-Wick XL candle, 3.4oz reed diffuser, 8.4oz large reed diffuser, 6.7oz diffuser refill, 3.4oz room spray, bar soap, and incense sticks. If you fall in love with a scent, you can live with it in every room of your home.
Shop Cereria Molla at Wicked Scents
We carry one of the largest Cereria Molla selections in the New York and New Jersey area, with the full range of candles, reed diffusers, room sprays, diffuser refills, incense sticks and soap available at our Hoboken, NJ shop and online with free shipping on orders over $100. If you have never tried Cereria Molla, start with Velvet Wood — we have never had a customer regret it.
The Best Candles for Small Apartments (and Why Scent Matters More in a Small Space)
If you live in a Hoboken studio, a Jersey City one-bedroom, or a Manhattan apartment, you already know the challenge: everything you do in your home happens in the same 600 square feet. You cook, work, sleep, and entertain in the same room. That means what your apartment smells like matters more — not less — than in a larger home.
The right candle can make a small space feel intentional, calm, and genuinely inviting. The wrong one can make it feel like you are trying too hard, or worse, like you are covering something up. Here is how to choose well.
Scent Throw: Light, Not Heavy
In a small space, a candle with heavy throw will overwhelm you within twenty minutes. You want medium to light throw — something that scents the room without announcing itself. This means avoiding most gourmand (food-scented) candles, very heavy musks, and anything described as “warm and enveloping” unless your space has high ceilings.
What works best: fresh, green, woody, and lightly floral scents that fill the room gently rather than saturating it.
Our Top Picks for Small Apartments
Apotheke White Vetiver Classic 10.5oz
Silky cashmere, eucalyptus, earthy vetiver, and white cedar. This is the candle that makes a small apartment smell like a boutique hotel suite — which is exactly what it is. Apotheke created White Vetiver as the official scent of 1Hotels. It has medium throw, incredible complexity, and 60–70 hours of burn time. It works in bedrooms, living rooms, and home offices equally well. If you can only buy one candle, make it this one.
Voluspa Eucalyptus and White Sage Classic 9.5oz
Crisp, herbal, and instantly clearing. This is the candle to light after cooking, after a stressful workday, or before guests arrive. The eucalyptus and sage combination feels clean without smelling clinical. Our best-selling Voluspa for a reason — it works in any size space, any time of day.
Cereria Molla Verbena di Sicilia 8oz
Sicilian lemon, verbena, and lemongrass. Bright, Mediterranean, and genuinely transporting. This handmade Spanish candle has a subtle throw that is perfect for studios and small living rooms. It is the candle equivalent of opening a window onto a coastal terrace — without the noise.
P.F. Candle Co. Teakwood and Tobacco 7.2oz
Leather, teak, and orange. P.F. keeps their scent stories short and nails it every time. Teakwood and Tobacco is the candle for people who find most candles too sweet or too floral. It works beautifully in a home office or bedroom — sophisticated and quietly masculine without being overwhelming in a small space.
Lucky Honeybee Chai Latte
Made in Jersey City, NJ — this one is for our local customers. Warm chai spices, vanilla, and a hint of black tea. This is the candle that makes your apartment smell like the best version of a cozy morning. Lucky Honeybee is a small-batch, locally made brand that we are proud to carry. The throw is warm but not heavy, making it ideal for smaller rooms.
Sizing for Small Spaces
You do not need a 48oz jumbo candle for a studio apartment. The 7oz to 10.5oz classic size is ideal — enough throw to fill a small room without overpowering it. Save the 3-wick and large jars for open-plan spaces and living rooms with higher ceilings.
Mini tins (2oz) are perfect for bathrooms and desks — small, focused scent in a very contained space.
One More Tip
Rotate your scents seasonally. A fresh citrus or green candle in spring and summer, a woodier or spicier one in fall and winter. Your nose adapts to scents it smells daily, so switching every few months keeps your home feeling fresh and intentional.
All of the candles above are available at Wicked Scents in Hoboken, NJ and online with free shipping on orders over $100. Not sure which scent is right for your space? Come in and smell them in person — that is what we are here for.
Apotheke vs. Voluspa: Which Candle Brand Is Right for You?
Two of our best-selling brands. Both exceptional. Completely different in personality. If you have been staring at both on our shelves trying to decide, here is the breakdown that will help you choose.
Apotheke: Brooklyn Cool
Apotheke was founded in Brooklyn and it shows. The brand has an industrial elegance — white-translucent glass, matte finishes, understated labels. Their fragrances are complex and unexpected: White Vetiver (the official scent of 1Hotels worldwide) layers eucalyptus, cashmere, and earthy vetiver. Charcoal smells like a low-lit bar — burnt maple, smoky cedar, raspberry. Canvas is crisp linen and lily of the valley. These are not simple single-note candles.
Apotheke uses a premium soy wax blend, hand-poured in Brooklyn. Burn times on the 10.5oz Classic run 60–70 hours. The 3-Wick burns 120–140 hours. Every product in the line is vegan, phthalate-free, and paraben-free.
Who Apotheke is for: People who want a candle that smells like something they have never smelled before. The person who buys coffee-table design books. Anyone who appreciates a scent with real depth and complexity.
Voluspa: California Refined
Voluspa is based in Southern California and their aesthetic reads exactly that way — warmer, more feminine, a little more maximalist. Their iconic embossed glass vessels are immediately recognizable. Where Apotheke leans urban and minimal, Voluspa leans lush and romantic.
Their fragrance library is vast. French Cade Lavender is one of the most universally loved candle scents on the market — wild cade wood and fresh lavender, somehow both herbal and elegant. Eucalyptus and White Sage is our single best-selling Voluspa — crisp, herbal, and instantly clearing. Baltic Amber is warm and sensual. Mokara is a white orchid scent that works in any room.
Voluspa uses a proprietary coconut wax blend, which gives their candles a particularly clean, creamy burn. Their 9.5oz Classic burns 60 hours. Their 18oz Large Jar burns 100 or more hours.
Who Voluspa is for: People who want beautiful home fragrance that smells universally lovely. A great gift when you want to be safe but not boring. Anyone who gravitates toward lighter, more floral or fresh scent profiles.
The Bottom Line
If you want a candle that starts a conversation, buy Apotheke. If you want a candle that makes everyone in the room happy, buy Voluspa. Both brands reward repeat customers — Apotheke fans tend to cycle through their whole catalog; Voluspa fans tend to find one or two scents and reorder forever.
We carry the full lines of both at Wicked Scents in Hoboken, NJ. Come in and smell them side by side — our staff knows both collections inside and out. Or order online with free shipping on orders over $100.
How to Make Your Candle Last Longer: The Complete Candle Care Guide
You spent $40 on a beautiful candle. The last thing you want is a tunneled, sooty, half-burned mess two weeks later. The good news: candle care is simple once you know the rules. Here is everything you need to get the most out of every candle you burn.
Trim Your Wick — Every Single Time
This is the single most important candle care habit. Before every burn, trim your wick to 1/4 inch. A wick that is too long creates a larger flame, which burns the wax faster, produces more soot, and can cause the glass to overheat. You do not need anything fancy — a proper wick trimmer makes it easier (we carry the Apotheke Gold and Black versions in store), but small scissors work too. Trim before every burn, including the very first one.
The First Burn Is the Most Important
Candle wax has memory. On your first burn, let the candle burn long enough for the melt pool to reach all the way to the edges of the vessel — typically 2 to 4 hours depending on the diameter. If you extinguish it before the melt pool reaches the edges, the wax will tunnel straight down the center on every subsequent burn, wasting a significant portion of the candle. This is especially important for wider candles like the Apotheke 3-Wick or Voluspa 18oz Large Jar — give them the time they need on that first burn.
Do Not Burn Too Long
As important as burning long enough is not burning too long. Most candles should burn no more than 4 hours at a time. Beyond that, the wick can start to mushroom, the glass can get dangerously hot, and fragrance throw actually decreases as the wax pool becomes too deep. A good rule: 2 to 4 hours on, allow to fully cool and solidify, then repeat.
Keep the Wax Pool Clean
Before relighting, check the wax pool for debris — trimmed wick pieces, matches, or anything that fell in. Remove them before lighting. Debris in the wax pool can cause uneven burning and is a fire hazard.
Extinguish Without the Smoke
Blowing out a candle sends a stream of smoke into the air and can blow hot wax onto the sides of the vessel. Instead, use a wick snuffer to gently cap the flame. We carry Apotheke snuffers in black and gold. If you do not have one, most Apotheke candles come with a lid for exactly this purpose — just set it gently over the flame.
Keep It Away From Drafts
Drafts from open windows, fans, and air vents cause uneven burning, excessive dripping, and soot on the inside of the glass. Place your candle somewhere stable with minimal air movement.
When to Stop Burning
Stop burning when 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom. Burning below this point can cause the glass to overheat and crack. The vessel is yours to keep — wash it out with warm soapy water and reuse it as a planter, catchall, or glassware.
